News Theatre Victoria Station

The new cinema was built on old railway offices site within Victoria Station. The new company retained the services of Alister G.MacDonald, A.R.I.B.A., who completed architecture at University College, London. He was the R.I.B.A. Donaldson Medallist 1920 – 21. During his long vacations he worked as a builders labourer and plumber’s mate on a housing scheme in Buckinghamshire. Learning his theatre technique whilst assistant to Frank Verity F.R.I.B.A. Theatre Architect, spending two and a half years as a Clerk of Works before starting a private practice on his own in 1926. MacDonald’s external design for the new cinema was given the streamline Art Deco appearance of the new 1930’s liners. A year later in 1934 he was engaged to build another News Theatre within Waterloo railway station, however, externally it did not match that of his previous News Theatre at Victoria Station.
