Georgia Twin

During the construction of the first stage of the massive CHOA campus that would eventually cover everything from the old cafeteria next door to the I-85 access road, the Martin Cinerama building was used as offices for the many contractors working on the project. This picture shows the rear of the building which was also where most of the parking was located during the theater days.

The windows and the back door were not original to the theater. When the auditorium was twinned in 1976 the new screens were moved forward to a point even with the side exit doors and a suite for corporate offices was built in that space with access through this back entrance. That is why the seat count drooped from around 850 for the Cinerama auditorium to about 325 for each of the twins. Moving the screens so close to the remaining seats magnified the flaw of not going to the expense of repositioning the seats from their curved rows to the new and much smaller straight on screens.

That flat structure sticking out from the side as well as the dark vertical panels and block wall sections were samples of the planned exterior materials for the new hospital being weather tested. The board by the back door had all of the notices regarding OSHA, Workman’s Comp, Minimum Wage, and the countless other signs the government requires employers to post in offices and job sites. The entrance to the old lobby had an equally large number of building permits posted there.
