The Eastgate Plaza had its grand opening in 1972 with The Movies as its twin-screen movie house. But that proved unsuccessful so the rebranded Eastgate Cinema 2 opened on September 6, 1974 (upper left corner with “The Bootlegger” and “Thunderbolt & LIghtfoot.” Moving from a first-run house to dollar house, the theater closed in May of 1984. Its relaunch with Caligula in June 17, 1974 (ad at right) led to a three-month run for the film and big legal troubles for the Eastgate Cinema. A slight rebranding to Eastgate Adult Cinema (bottom left corner) was more truth in advertising but wasn’t a big help in the legal or public relations battle. The Eastgate would close as an adult theater.
