The Empire being reconstructed 1933
This June 1933 aerial view captures the scale of the reconstruction work. Komisarjevsky’s designs could not have been more radical for the old building. The large foyer area was in the minimalist cubist style with rectangular areas of primary colours. The whole scheme for the interior was the polar opposite of the ornate Gothic and Italianate/classical schemes used elsewhere on the Granada circuit.
There’s a staggering disregard for ‘health & safety’: see the men on the ridge of the auditorium roof, for example.
The photos is also a testament to the Great Depression: see the large poster “SPEND FOR EMPLOYMENT, 124 MEN are at work here building the new Empire”.
