Following the Cinerama roadshow engagement at the Palace Theatre in Tampa, “2001” opens across the bay at the Center Theatre in St. Petersburg. Note the Cinerama logo which appeared in the daily ads. Although the Center was a 70mm roadshow house that played many reserved seat attractions during the 1960s, it was not a Cinerama theatre. “2001” was shown on a flat screen–a big disappointment for anyone who had previously seen the film on a curved Cinerama screen. Ad from the St. Petersburg Times dated October 25, 1968.

The Center Theatre had a curved Cinemascope screen. It was a floating, or suspended screen, similar to the one at the State Theatre, and it was backlighted with pink light. There was no curtain and no adjustable masking. Flat and Scope had a common height, and flat didn’t take up the full width of the screen. Since there was no moveable masking, the unused part of the screen was exposed.
