David Jones flagship department store on the corner of Market and Elizabeth Streets as viewed from Hyde Park. The lack of foliage in this circa 1927 colorized photo is a result of an underground railway line having just been built below by the ‘cut and cover’ method. The main entry to St James Railway Station, which opened 20 December 1926, is seen foreground left. The David Jones Department Store opened in 1927/8 and is still operating, having recently been refurbished. A crane can be seen on the roof of the St James theater next door as construction work on the building continued after the auditorium opened 26 March 1926.
