Top Left: Scene from the St James 1928 stage version of “Rio Rita” Fuller’s biggest hit of the period. Top Right: Star Gladys Moncrieff (1892-1976) as Rita in a duet with British/American baritone John Valentine. Bottom: An Abbott and Costello film version of “Rio Rita” played the St James at Xmas 1942 with Sunday performances allowed by authorities due to large numbers of military personnel on leave in town and short of entertainment. At the time the St James closed in March 1971 laws had been changed to allow Sunday operation but industrial matters had not yet been settled to make opening economic.
