St. James Theatre
“The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone With The Wind” produced in 1939 are well remembered early color titles from MGM. However it was “Sweethearts” produced the previous year, featuring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, that was the first full length 3-strip Technicolor feature made by the company. It opened at the St James Friday 27 January 1939, and as an added technological wonder was supported by a new 3-D Audioscopiks short. A flood of MGM color musicals would follow.
