History & Timeline

• 1886: Opened as Australia Hall live theatre on September 22, 1886.

• 1906: Began screening films.

• Name Changes: Renamed the Empire Theatre (1914), Australia Picture Theatre (1927), and New Century / Century (1957) before closing around 1964.

• 1970s–2000s: Reopened in the 1970s as Australia Cinema, expanding to 3 screens in 1996, 4 screens in 1997, and 5 screens in 2006 (658 total seats).

• December 2009: Closed its doors and relocated next door to become Odeon 5 Cinemas.

• Subsequent Years: Purchased by the Orange Evangelical Church in 2011, sold in 2018, and later approved for mixed-use hotel/retail redevelopment plans.
