Chakiris did about fifteen movies as a dancer in musical numbers from 1947 to 1957. He was selected to play ‘Riff’ in the London stage production of “West Side Story.” Chakiris was chosen to play'Bernardo' in the movie version of “West Side Story.” After winning the Academy Award, he was signed to a long-term contact with the Mirisch company.
