1953 - Inferno was 20th Century Fox’s first 3-D film & was shot natively in 3D on 35mm film in the standard Academy aspect ratio of 1.37:1, combined with groundbreaking stereophonic sound.

Inferno is a 1953 American thriller drama starring Robert Ryan, William Lundigan and Rhonda Fleming, directed by Roy Ward Baker. It was shot in Technicolor and shown in 3-D, with stereophonic sound.

Matt Gamble writes - While Inferno is a 3D film, a term that is seemingly evolving into a perverse term in film circles, Inferno uses 3D to a degree rarely seen in the medium. It clearly is able to separate from the notion that 3D is merely a gimmick and stand alone as a great film on its own terms. 3D isn’t a gimmick when it is used to skillfully, it isn’t even an enhancement. No, Inferno is the remarkable and rare exception that proves 3D, at its most effective, is a requirement.

Inferno was one of the best and last movies to be made in 3-D during the boom in the early ‘50s.

Certainly its use of space emphasized the dramatic possibilities of 3-D and reveals, as more than one person has observed, that the device had largely been squandered in other films made at the time
