Censorship Against "Birth of a Nation" (1916)

There appears to be no doubt that “Birth of a Nation” (1915) is the most controversial film ever produced in America. I never attempted to see the film until my professor assigned it to be viewed in his African American History course on black cinema and photography. One can understand why it was hotly protested against for the stereotypes protrayed and the violent actions it advocated. If the audiences who wanted to see the picture really stopped to analyze whether what they saw was true or not is alarming because of the consequences of blindly believing in the vision of one director’s one-sided view of history.
