The theater has been named to Time Out’s prestigious list of the 100 greatest cinemas in the world, standing out as New Jersey’s sole representative. Built in the Tudor-Revival style, the theater debuted with a grand opening in 1922 featuring silent films like Orphans of the Storm. In 2017, it shut down after 95 years of continuous operation due to a lease dispute.In 2025 Revival, Montclair Film signed a multi-year lease to restore and relaunch the venue as a three-screen nonprofit community cinema.
