Tiles from the old theatre - The Yarraville townhouse owner was fascinated to discover remnants of the buildings’ theatrical history while renovating - The three-bedroom home at 114 Stephen St is located within the former Lyric Theatre, which opened Nov 11, 1918 and closed in the 1980s.

We purchased the vacant structure in the late 1990s after it had been used as a clothing factory.

While digging out a basement cellar underneath the ground floor, we came across tiles from the ex-theatre’s foyer. We discovered graffiti dated May 1930 on one of the walls, although most of the writing was indiscernible.

“We have ended up with a very liveable space of three bedrooms, three bathrooms and one-and-a-half kitchens if using the whole space,” the owner said.
