This landmark recital was a key stop during his historic 1951 US Concert Tour, which began in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and spanned 22 venues across the country. Organized locally by promoter Flora Ward Hineline, the performance took place at the peak of Lanza’s fame, right around the theatrical release of his hit MGM musical film, The Great Caruso.
The concert was an immediate sensation. Tickets went on sale following promotional advertisements in local newspapers like the Toledo Blade. The entire event completely sold out within 48 hours of being announced, weeks ahead of the actual performance date.Ticket Pricing: Ticket prices ranged from $1.20 for back balcony seats to $3.60 for premium center orchestra rows (including tax).
The Venue: The Paramount Theatre on Adams Street was an atmospheric, Italian Courtyard-themed palace with over 3,000 seats, making it a visually spectacular backdrop for the operatic tenor. The Accompanist: Lanza was accompanied on piano by his long-time regular collaborator and conductor, Constantine Callinicos.
The Repertoire - While a full live audio recording of the Toledo performance does not survive, Lanza’s 1951 tour repertoire leaned heavily on a mix of classical operatic arias, Italian art songs, and popular romantic ballads. Audiences on this tour were typically treated to standard Lanza triumphs, including:“Che gelida manina” (from Puccini’s La Bohème)“Vesti la giubba” (from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci)“Mamma mia, che vo' sapé” and other traditional Neapolitan songs"Be My Love", his million-selling English pop hit from the movie The Toast of New Orleans.
