The Cars That Ate Paris (1974) was Peter Weir’s first feature film and is a foundational work of the “Ozploitation” genre. This horror-comedy depicts a rural Australian town that survives by orchestrating car accidents to salvage parts and survivors.
Despite the title, the film is set in the fictional Australian town of Paris. It was primarily shot in Sofala, a historic gold-rush town in New South Wales.
To promote the film at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974, the production crew drove a Volkswagen Beetle covered in deadly spikes around the streets of Cannes.
US Title Change: For its American theatrical release in 1976, the film was retitled The Cars That Eat
Legendary director Stanley Kubrick listed the film as one of his 93 favorite movies
