While known as Hudson’s Bijou the theatre was used primarily for variety, minstrels and pantomime. The building was renamed The Tivoli in 1900 and existed until 1913. “ The theatre would later become a cinema, to be known for a short time as the Star Theatre.

The Majestic Theatre was a new building constructed on the same site as the former Hudson’s Bijou (originally known as White’s Rooms).

In 1916, the previous structure—which had also been known as the Tivoli, the Bijou, and the Star Theatre—was demolished along with the adjacent Clarence Hotel. The new development featured the Majestic Theatre and the new Majestic Hotel built side-by-side.
