Tivoli Theatre 249 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC
John Holloway writes - Despite the extensive refurb in 1956, the introduction of TV the same year saw audiences tumble. The “Tiv” was hit especially hard as many variety performers flocked to the new medium of TV. Closed as a live theatre in April 1966 with “Professor” Jimmy Edwards.
The Tivoli reopened as a cinema soon after. The steep throw to the screen resulted in an alarming “keystone” effect, Screening mainly WB fare and a few MGM products, the “Angelique” series of films were the main money makers. A “suspicious” fire that gutted the building saw the end of an era. New offices and shops were hastily built on the site.
