Seventy years ago on February 25, 1954, RKO Radio Pictures fifth 3-D feature DANGEROUS MISSION had its gala world premiere at the 1,823 seat Utah Theatre in Salt Lake City, UT. The next day, a second world premiere was held at the 1,785 seat Civic Center in Great Falls, MT. Piper Laurie took part in both premiere events.
RKO offered the film in both formats and most exhibitors opted to play it flat. DANGEROUS MISSION is a prime example of a movie that truly comes to life when seen as intended in widescreen third-dimension.
The Archive once held a stunning dual-35mm Technicolor 3-D print and it never failed to entertain. When it was screened in 2003 at the World 3-D Film Expo in Hollywood, Leonard Maltin commented that it was much better than his dismissive review in his TV Movies book.
Even star Piper Laurie reappraised the movie when seeing it again in widescreen, Technicolor 3-D.
To the best of our knowledge, Warner Bros has done archival preservation from the original 35mm left/right color elements. Unfortunately, they have not yet created a restored digital 3-D master which would allow both 3-D Blu-ray release and DCP availability for theatrical bookings.
