Wintergarden Theatre Alma Street, Rockhampton, QLD - 2013 & Demolition

The Wintergarden Theatre in Rockhampton was a historic cinema that was demolished in September 2013. The site was cleared to make way for a new shopping centre development. You can see the bio box still in one piece on the back wall as the building crumbles around it.

History and Demolition - Construction and Heyday: The theatre, which could seat around 2000 people, was built in the late 1920s and was a prime entertainment venue in Rockhampton for decades, showing both films and live performances.

Closure: - It closed as a cinema in the early 1970s, with sources citing 1973 or 1974 as the closure year.

Dereliction and Partial Use: - After its closure, the building stood idle for many years.

Portions were later repurposed, with the upstairs balcony level becoming a gymnasium while retaining the decorative plasterwork, and the downstairs used as a Blockbuster video store.

Demolition: - By 2013, the building was beyond repair, and its final “wrecking” or demolition took place around September 20th of that year.
