Cat Women of the Moon 3D (1953)
Five astronauts travel to the dark side of the moon on a scientific expedition. There they discover a cave which somehow retains a breathable atmosphere. They remove their space suits and venture on, soon finding a buried city where the last members of a 2 million year old civilization greet them with food and drink. Little do they know that these eight lovely leotard-clad women are planning to steal their ship.
Director: Arthur Hilton Writers: Jack Rabin, Al Zimbalist, Roy Hamilton Starring: Sonny Tufts, Victor Jory, Marie Windsor, William Phipps, Douglas Fowley, Carol Brewster Producers: Jack Rabin, Al Zimbalist
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction calls the film absurd, but notes that it “qualifies as one of the most influential science-fiction films ever made” as it influenced later low budget films “in which astronauts discover decadent, all-female (or almost all-female) civilizations on other planets, including Fire Maidens from Outer Space (1956), Missile to the Moon (1958), Queen of Outer Space (1958), Nude on the Moon (1961), Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962) [and] Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1968). The genre first appeared in Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, also released in 1953.
When these alien monster obstacles take the shape of meteorites & giant moon spiders the film remains fun & lighthearted, but more than a little indistinct. For some reason, it’s the hidden Dark Side of the Moon city of sinister women in black catsuits with a passion for misandry & ritualistic dance that distinguishes Cat-Women of the Moon as above average, 3D-era schlock. I just can’t place my finger on it. - -Brandon Ledet
