Scala Cinema New Milton
The Scala cinema was the first to open in Station Road, New Milton. The building an ex army hut that was purchased by the partnership of Mr Scott & Mr Wilkinson who had decided in 1920 to open a cinema in New Milton. Silent films were shown at 6.30 pm. Thursday Friday and Saturday with piano accompaniment, by 1923 this had changed to vinyl records. The projection was from behind the screen. The Scala had a cafe and confectionery shop either side of the cinema entrance, as can be seen above. A second cinema The Waverley opened in the town during November 1929, this caused the demise of the Scala which succumbed, closing in 1934.
