The theatre was originally opened in 1938 as the Lakemba Royal and seated 791 patrons and was operated by the late Messrs. Britz and Cloonan. In 1951 the Lakemba Royal was acquired by Greater Union Theatres and renamed the Lakemba Odeon.
The theatre was converted into a supermarket before eventually being demolished. “Lakemba Palms” stands on the site today.

Geoffrey Hendy writes - I was born and bred in Lakemba. I lived only 2 blocks away and saw many movies there when I was growing up. The other theatre mentioned by Kevin Cronin, the Magnet was right up the other end of the shopping centre. It was opposite Vic Patrick’s pub. Vic’s wife ran the pub and Vic was the bouncer.
Ron Mitchell writes - In the early sixties I worked in that theater. Family from, I think Beverly Hills was the licensee. Great memories. My mate Tony kept his horse behind the Theater.
Wendy Neville writes - Saw my first picture there with my sisters - The King and I 😃
