PICTURE GARDENS BLAZE - Way back in cinema history 1941
Damage at Nedlands. Firemen from three Brigades battled with a fire which spread from grass and scrub into the Broadway Picture Gar -dens in Broadway, Nedlands, yesterday afternoon. The screen, stage and loud speaker were destroyed in the fire but efforts will be made to re-equip the theatre by next Saturday. The programme last night was screened in the adjoining theatre.
The fire started in scrub outside the picture gardens and when the flames, fanned by an easterly breeze, threatened the rear fence of the gardens a call was sent to the Claremont fire brigade. Fire men attended also from the McCourt street and headquarters stations.
Two lines of hose were run out but the flames attacked the rear fence and had a firm hold on the screen and stage before the firemen got the upper hand. None of the seating was damaged.
