Gaumont Cinema Lewisham

Photograph taken 1962 three days before the fire in the stalls area during a second run “The Guns of Navarone”. The former restaurant area on the first floor was now used as a Bingo club with entrance on far left side. Above the Bingo sign is an advertising board for the forthcoming show for Ella Fitzgerald who was due to appear on stage six days later, this was cancelled and the Gaumont was to close for decorations and refurbishments to both interior and facade. The exterior included the upper level removal of the large display board which almost covered the whole of the old large restaurant area window, now to allow light into a newly converted “Top Rank Bingo Club” its new entrance from the right side. The left side was converted into a Bingo emergency exit only and installation of a new sales window onto the pavement served from the existing foyer kiosk. Perhaps the most noticeable change of all was the replacement of the top Gaumont lettering into Odeon.
