Strand Theatre, Steubenville,1916
This is the front of the Strand Theatre, Market and Fifth Street, Steubenville, Ohio. The banner above the box office advertises the 1916 Selig film “The Crisis,” an American Civil War tale based on the 1899 novel of the same name by the once-famous American author Winston Churchill, whose fame was later eclipsed by that of a British writer and politician of the same name.
In the 1890s the pair came to an agreement that, to avoid confusion, the lesser-known British writer would publish under the name Winston Spencer Churchill, which was later shortened to Winston S. Churchill. Sadly, this compromise was insufficient to save the American’s reputation, which is likely, at least in part, the result of the British author’s later (quite notorious) contretemps with the German writer Adolph Hitler. Sic Transit Gloria, eh?
