Theatre Royal Bradford being demolished

This demolition photo shows how the auditorium looked after it had been remodelled as a cinema in the 1920. It stayed like this until the 1960s when 70mm projection facilities were installed; and a curved screen built in front of the proscenium. As was the fashion then, everything was curtained over. The big screen gamble failed, as Leeds grabbed 70mm roadshow movies. Key was Leeds Majestic’s hold on The Sound of Music whilst the Royal (as it renamed itself) had to make do with less successful shows like My Fair Lady.

From conversion to a cinema in the 1920s to closure and demolition, the projection room was located at the rear of the stalls. During the 1960s fitting out for 70 mm screenings, a section of architectural trim under the front of the balcony was removed to eke out an extra bit of height on the picture.
