Thomas Sangston brought the cinema to Chelsea back in 1920 – first as an open-air theatre on the corner of Thames Promenade and Station Street. In 1923 he moved to a newly built theatre at 437 Nepean Highway. There he showed silent films to an eager audience.
Mr Sangston’s business was a true family affair with his son, Arthur, in charge of the projector and another son, Ernest, acting as cinematographer for a 1927 film promoting Chelsea. Other family members would have to dress up to promote the cinema’s current film.
