The Shandon Drive-In opened on 19th December 1956
Image - Invite to the opening night
Courtesy of - Lost Warrnambool - It must have been an incredibly exciting night for Warrnambool. Were you there? The gala opening included a fundraiser for the elderly citizens club to build their clubrooms, with each car load expected to donate at least 10/- to the cause.
The drive-in was started by the Henderson family, originally from South Australia, who later relocated to Warrnambool. This was a large drive-in of 800 car capacity. The family ran a chain of drive-ins in South Australia, but this was their first in Victoria.
A later owner was the legendary Stan Stevens, who also ran the Capitol Theatre in Kepler St.
The drive-in closed on 3 Feb 1985: a day still mourned by those who loved nothing more than to dodge the ticket booth by hiding under rugs on the back seat of the car, or in the boot…
