The original Ballarat Regent auditorium.
The Ballantyne designed Regents had in common a parapet from which patrons in the foyer could look down into the Back Stalls. Others were later obscured by curtains, but Ballarat’s cold winters dictated draught proof glass windows instead.
The theatre had a full fly tower stage and organ chambers, but the coming of sound meant that no organ was ever installed. The city does have a theatre organ, a Compton. It is installed in the fine old Her Majesty’s Theatre, the home of the Royal South Street music, performance and art competitions.
