Ritz Cinema Bexhill-on-Sea
After entering through a very bland brick built front entrance patrons experienced a more pleasing environment within the bright stylized interior, seen in the photograph above taken on opening night Monday 18th January. The opening film to be shown in the 1218 seated auditorium supplied by Pixton’s Ltd., was “The Three Maxims” starring Anna Neagle. Interior decorations were carried out by Waltaudaw Cinema Supply Co.Ltd., who also supplied the Simplex projectors. These well known cinema decorators carried out many interiors for Union Cinema’s. Others included Ritz Felixstowe, Ritz Hastings, Ritz Barnsley and perhaps their best the Ritz Belfast by Architect Leslie H. Kemp. Also here at Bexhill Walturdaw experimented with additional lighting effects playing onto gold and silver fibrous plaster ribbing, seen on the right splay wall either side of the gilded ventilation grilles and top right of proscenium opening, however, these were not successful and not to the high standard of Holophane lighting.
