Theatre details - Located in the northwest Melbourne district of Essendon North. The Southern Cross Picture Theatre opened in 1925 and was designed by Essendon based architect V.G. Cook. It was renovated in 1939 in an Art Deco style to the plans of architectural firm, Cowper, Murphy & Appleford.
It was re-named Regal Theatre on 12th August 1939 when it re-opened with Spencer Tracey in “Boys Town. It was operated by W.J. Howard.
Closed 26/11/1958 & demolished in 2016. A mattress/bedding shop was operating in the new building on the site - notes by Ken Roe
