Odeon Cinema Chelmsford
Photograph taken summer of 1963. Odeon now replaces the former Ritz lettering on the illuminated tower, and restaurant removed above front windows only the rubbed brickwork is a reminder. However, the most inspiring design by Eugene Mollo must have been the wrapped around film and spool on the front canopy that also incorporated the information of current film on arriving and next weeks film on leaving. The lighting under the canopy was also very effective as comets with a large bright opal circular fitting with small low clear bulbs featuring as the trail of particles behind. Mollo used sections of this same design again without illumination on the front of the orchestra enclosure and radiator grille covers at the short lived Rex cinema in Coventry, also a Cromie, Mollo & Egan collaboration.
