Tivoli Cinema Wimborne
Photograph taken in 1981 showing the closed Tivoli cinema designed by Architect Edward George de Wilde Holding 1886 – 1958. Holding’s offices were in Bournemouth, from where he worked designing eleven cinemas, his first being Savoy Shaftesbury opening Boxing Day 1933. On 11th October 1935 Holding’s finest Art Deco cinema the Moderne Bournemouth, sadly now much altered loosing its best features. The Moderne was the first to be constructed by Arthur Stanley Prince also based in Bournemouth. Prince was the favoured contractor by Holding and constructed a further six cinemas for him including the Tivoli, the last being the Wellesley cinema in Wellington and like the Tivoli they are the last two operating for the purposes they were built.
