Picture House Cinema Norwich
This photograph taken in 1927 shows the stage with orchestra, standing centre in front of his eight piece Orchestra is Conductor Sidney Skedge, and far right seated is a lady percussionist. Skedge arranged music for the silent films which were notated on Monday mornings after viewing the film, sometimes films came with a score so there would be a run-through with the orchestra. In 1929 the Picture House was refurbished again this time for sound, however, the orchestra continued for some years as many films were still silent also there was still stage variety. Alterations were overseen by Architect J. Owen Bond, besides the sound installations, there were the inclusion of new organ chambers, additional dressing rooms and updated heating and ventilation. The new Compton organ was first played by organist Leslie James, later John Bee became organist and the BBC produced live very popular radio programmes direct from the cinema.
