MAJESTIC THEATRE INVERCARGILL - 1985 PRIOR TO DEMOLITION
Photo - Collection of the Southland Museum & Art Gallery Niho o te Taniwha.
Located on Dee Street, between Esk Street and Tay Street. Seating was provided in stalls and balcony levels. The Albion Picture Theatre was opened on 22nd April 1916 and was a conversion of the 1890-built Albion Hotel. It was re-named Majestic Theatre in 1928. By 1950 it was operated by the Kerridge-Odeon chain. By 1968 it was operated by the Fullers Theatres chain. It was possibly closed in the early-1980’s and was demolished in 1985.
In 1992 the 5-screen Reading Cinemas was built on the site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). - Notes by Ken Roe.
