CinemaScope
The Newmarket screen was enlarged to play CinemaScope in 1954, opening with the epic The Robe on Fri Dec 10, 1954 – The installation of CinemaScope was an exciting time, not only for the public but for the theatre staff as well. CinemaScope was big, everything about this format was big. Expectations were high as work began on this major innovation.
A metal tubular frame was installed to lace up the new Miracle Mirror screen. Then black masking was hung to frame the screen top & bottom, along with movable motorized black masking to cater for all known screen ratios. New curtains were hung, complete with a valance to hide the curtain track.
