Astoria Theatre Finsbury Park
This opulent 1930 perspective design of the Astoria Fountain Court, was by Laverdet. It was designed to surprise the public as they entered the theatre through a very small entrance lobby and it certainly worked. Marc-Henri & Laverdet were working on the interior decorations of two Astoria’s at this time, as was the architect Edward Stone. Although both theatres were for the same company they were very different in design, Finsbury Park had an atmospheric auditorium whilst Streatham was Art Deco Egyptian themed throughout, being far more impressive, even the opening programme was a work of art. The Astoria Streatham opened on 30th June 1930. Three months later on 29th September, Finsbury Park Astoria followed. The Astoria Finsbury Park has survived almost intact, however, the beautiful Egyptian designed Astoria Streatham with its spectacular murals did not!!!
