An application to build a 14-storey residential and commercial high-rise in Burleigh Heads was lodged with council on Thursday Plans that could have seen the 90-year-old site demolished were abandoned in 2019 after public outcry The proposal has received tentative support from councillor Daphne McDonald who has regularly opposed the scope and scale of development in the area Weiya Holdings lodged a development application with the City of Gold Coast that includes 36 apartments and three levels of basement parking.
The proposal’s architect, John Flynn, said his firm has conducted a conservation management plan to determine “what should be saved, what can be removed” after the building was added to the local heritage register in 2019.
“We’re trying to find that happy medium between the conservation of what’s important fabric and creating a building that is of its place in Burleigh,” he said.
Mr Flynn says the building’s historic facade along with “amazing light fittings and doors and taps out of the six apartments at the back, which are classic 1950s”, will be preserved.
The 90-year-old building was remodelled in 1955 and again in 1976 with most of its original fixtures removed.
