Palais Pictures Destroyed. DAMAGE £35,000. Fire Chief’s Strong Comment. Ascribed by workmen as due lo the fusing of an electric-light wire, a fire broke out at 3.30 p.m. yesterday in the Palais Picture Theatre, Lower Esplanade, St.Kilda.
Starting in the roof the flames spread with amazing rapidity, and in five minutes the whole building was ablaze. When a strong detachment of firemen arrived they found that the water supply available produced only a weak trickle from the nozzles of the hoses. The building and contents were completely destroyed, and only sustained efforts by the firemen saved the Palais de Danse, a similar structure a chain away, from a similar fate.
Both buildings are owned by Messrs. H, L, and F. Phillips. The picture theatre was situated at the corner of the Lower Esplanade and Cavell-street, a narrow street on the other side of which stands the wooden structure of Luna Park – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
