Sunset Drive In, Tumwater, WA

Picture taken by my step-dad,Joe Basil, who managed the Sunset for his father and partners 1951-54. Joe was from Raymond and moved to Tumwater for the venture. Picture likely taken in 53-54 time frame.

Thanks for posting that picture. I can remember seeing the remnants of where the playground equipment was in the 1980’s. I also remember how the water collected in big puddles on several rows. The fence in your picture looks to be in good condition, as it got pretty beat up in the 1980’s from the windstorms. Did your stepdad know Larry Fisher? He worked there and eventually became it’s longtime manager.

Hi Ken. Not sure about Larry Fisher. Was he a projectionist? I have a couple nice shots of the projector room with gear and two shots of different operators. Will post these soon. Also have a nice shot of a couple folks behind the concession counter.

Just posted seven new photos, Ken. One of the projectionists in the pictures looks a bit like the picture of Ken when the theater was closing down. Maybe just a coincidence.
