Opening of a new Theatre at Winchelsea
After many weeks of work the erection of the Winchelsea Theatre is an accomplished fact. Facing the main Street in the eastern portion of the town the structure stands. The building is owned by W. Lawrence & Sons, and has been built under modern conditions, and in it’s construction every precaution has been taken to provide comfort and guard against any fear of fire. On each side of the entrance is an office through which a passage leads to the main hall, which measures 66ft x 32ft, with a height of 18ft. A highly polished Tasmanian hardwood floor is specially adapted for dancing. Three exit doors are included in the main part of the building.
The very fine stage measures 20 x 15ft. A supper room is at the rear with up to date conveniences. The whole of the lighting and heating will be electricity, and high powered globes in the main hall, providing a beautiful flood of light. A ten gallon electric urn is installed, and provides a welcome change to the copper for boiling water. The furnishings are now being installed and tend to show that the comfort of patrons has been the first consideration.
The hall will be officially opened on Friday night next, when a high class concert and dance will be held. The box plan is now open at Mr L. Levey’s – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
