The end of the line for the Spencer Theatre came in December of 1951 when the the theatre switched to an “Adult only” policy leading the City of Rock Island to assume obscene content was being shown. The Spencer management said that they would change their policy but appear to have simply closed up shop. In 1952, the city hoped to bulldoze the theatre for a government building.
