THE RENOWN THEATRE - Midland Junction Perth, Western Australia - Talkies Arrive - 1930

Talkies come to “The Renown Theatre” – The Swan Express (Midland Junction, WA) Fri 14 Mar 1930 Page 4, reports …

“The Renown Theatre “ TALKIE” INSTALLATION. OPENED BY HON. W. D. JOHNSON, MX.A.

There are few theatres in this State that can compare In comfort, lighting and cleanliness with the Renown at Midland Junction. Last Wednesday evening was a red letter day for its many patrons who filled the building, which, owing to its ventilating system, was beautifully cool. To anticipate the wishes of its many patrons the management installed the Talkie machine, and purchased the most up – to date instrument in the market, “The Raycophone”. This machine is Australian, and is made by Australians. A large number of people who count in the picture world were present at the installation, and were loud in their praise, not only of the machine, but of the general lighting effects, the acoustic properties of the theatre, and the excellence of the screen.

The Hon. W. D. Johnson, M.L.A., was present, and took the opportunity to congratulate the proprietors on the success which attended the opening night. He stressed the fact that the proprietors had, for many years, been active in the picture world, and were to be heartily congratulated on their enterprise in catering for the enjoyment of the people of Midland and district. In stating that the reproduction of the sounds was equal to any and better than most metropolitan theatres, he received the agreement of the large audience.

The lighting could not be improved upon. In their enterprise the proprietors have booked excellent pictures for the future delectation of their many patrons. These include Talkies from Messrs. Warner Bros., First National, RKO - Radio Corp, Universal, Cinema' Arts, British Dominions Production Corp., Columbia, and P.D.C. Co. in addition The management have the exclusive right of showing the only Talkie serials, Collegian series, Ken Maynard and Hoot Gibson in Talkie, the Cohen-Reilly pictures, and many other interesting items. One picture that appeals to all sections of the public, is “Rio Rita,” and that will be shown at this theatre immediately it leaves Perth. The management deserves well of the public for its enterprise. – NOTE – Photo depicts = The original stage, curtains & proscenium of “The Renown Theatre”.
