1926 – The Rialto Theatre Kew comes under the Hoyts banner
1926, Hoyts and two other companies, Electric Theatres P/L, and Associated Theatres P/L, (headed by Frank Thring Senior), merged to become Hoyts Theatres Limited, thus creating a 70 theatre circuit. This consisted of 60 screens in the Melbourne suburbs, which included The Rialto in Kew & the nearby “Our Theatre” in Camberwell, which was re-named “The Broadway”. The rest were located in the suburban areas of New South Wales. 1927 saw the opening of the magnificent Hoyts Regent Theatre in far-away Perth, Western Australia. By 1929 the Hoyts circuit had expanded to more than 100 theatres. In 1930, the Fox Film Corporation (now 20th Century Fox) secured a major shareholding in the company, and then made substantial investment in further expansion .. Contributed by Greg Lynch –
