Bruce Theatre
Between 1946 and 1947, Rayne residents could have seen films in one of six theaters which is unusual for such a small town: the Joy, the Acadia, the Gym Theatre, Buck’s Open Air Theatre, Buck’s Theatre, and the Bruce Theatre.
Following the Joy Theatre fire of 1946, Rayne bookings were carried at the local St. Joseph Gym where you could buy salvage items from the Joy Theatre (bottom right). Then “Buck” Hardy opened his own temporary drive-in in an open lot (upper left) before placing his Buck Theatre in a vacant retail shop in 1946 (pictured at right). Apparently this did not sit well with the Joy Theatre Circuit. So Hardy joined forces with A.J. “Bruce” Broussard to create the Bruce Theatre in 1947 (opening ad elsewhere in photos).
