“Wednesday is Pay Day.” Each week, $50 was set aside in a special account to fund the Pay Day drawing every Wednesday evening. At the point shown in this picture, there would have been four names drawn, three awards of $500 and one of $150. You must be present to win or you could have filled out a proxy card on Monday, Tuesday or at the Wednesday matinee. If there were no winners, the next week’s Pay Day would be worth a total of $1700 and so on. This drawing was started during the “Great Depression,” to improve attendance. It was discontinued in the 1950’s.
The tiny letters before “Bing Crosby” spelled out “Techni-color” which had added appeal to the audience. The next big appeal would be “Cinemascope” with surround sound.
