Gateway Theatre
With 200 patrons inside, the roof collapsed on November 14, 1940, Some signs of a plaster chips leaking into the projection booth was detected by Guy Bulifant Jr. and, as a precaution, evacuated the patrons from the balcony. Down below, the commotion from above combined with the swaying light fixtures led to an evacuation there, as well. Fortunate as the last person left the balcony, the roof gave way with the sprinkler pipe striking his wrist. Then the weight of the roof crashed to the first floor crushing rows of seats where people had just been sitting. Only four injuries were reported.
