Striking similarities between this remodeled auditorium and the from-scratch 1936 auditorium of the Del Mar, Santa Cruz–the work of William Chavalas–would indicate that the California’s remodeling was designed by Chavalas as well. “Modern Empire” was a term used by Chavalas to describe the Del Mar’s style, and is an apt description of the California’s auditorium also.
