Just Before Lee Remodel

This view was taken just prior to S. Charles Lee’s remodeling of the interior. However, it was not the original 1918 look, entirely. The decorative plaster evident here was original, but the paint scheme had been changed to reflect somewhat more opulent 1920s tastes. The curtains are very typical of the period. The dark inset panel on the sounding board over the proscenium is not original. A photograph shown in an article about Reid Bros. buildings in “The Architect and Engineer” magazine shows that the sounding board originally sported an large lyre–identical to that sculpted atop the theatre’s facade–encircled by a wreath.
